We are excited to announce our 2019 Charity of the Year…
Autism Aspergers Friendship Society of Calgary (AAFS)
AAFS provides respite care in a social and recreational environment for children, youth and adults on the Autism spectrum, This includes Autism, Aspergers, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder. They provide a welcoming and save environment for their members to learn social thinking and to take social risks, including practicing and developing interpersonal, relationship and communication skills.
Their mission: Friendship
Friendship means someone who you can trust and/or someone who heals you. You cannot simply ask to be friends, or if the other person is your friend, it is much more advanced than a yes or no answer, and friendship builds up over time.
Friendship is “People getting to know other people and being interested in one another. Liking them for who they are, and not judging them. Not judging the book by its cover.”
The organization provides their members with the ability to “choose their own adventure” and to have a hand in planning the details of different activities. Some of the great programs that they currently offer include:
- Specialized programs such as their movie project, earn-a-bike, parkour, and gardening
- Community outings
- Clubhouse nights
- and other specialized care programs such as after-school care
